In order to improve the visibility of traffic vehicles at night or in bad weather, the Federal Highway Administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation mandates that all trailers and trucks must have DOT C2 conspicuity tape on their bodies.
And to ensure uniformity across the country, all requirements and standards for visible tape on vehicles are written into the Manual on Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
There are clear standards for DOT C2 reflective tape requirements in the US Traffic Control Device Manual (MUTCD). It includes not only the retroreflection coefficient, but also the reflective tape color, width, and DOT C2 mark size and spacing.
1) Retroreflectivity: must meet or exceed the minimum requirements stipulated by DOT.
2) Color and width: alternating red and white patterns (6″ white / 6″ red and 7″ white / 11″ red); width is 2 inches.
3) The size and spacing of the “DOT C2” mark: the height of the “DOT C2” logo must be greater than or equal to 3mm, and there must be a “DOT-C2” mark every 12 inches
