DOT reflective tape is formulated by FMCSA and issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the conspicuity marking of vehicles.
It requires trucks and trailers with a gross weight rating (GVWR) over 10,000 pounds and a width over 80 inches to be marked with DOT C2-approved reflective tape for high visibility at night, effectively reducing traffic accidents.

For a reflective tape to meet DOT requirements, it must meet certain requirements. These requirements include the tape color, width, alternate color spacing, performance and reflectivity, and DOT certification logo.
Color – DOT tape must be made of alternating colors of red and white.
Width – DOT certified tapes can be 2″ wide, 3″ wide or 4″ wide. They stand for DOT C2, C3, and C4, respectively.
Spacing – 7 ” white / 11″ red and a 6″ white / 6″ red.
Performance and Reflectivity – DOT reflective tape must meet all performance requirements of ASTM D4956-90 Type V sheets. These requirements include adhesion, color fastness, flexibility, shrinkage, weather resistance, etc. Also reflectivity must meet the requirements of DOT C2 certification.
DOT certification logo – The DOT-C2 logo appears on the tape at least once every 12 inches and the characters should be at least 3 mm high
DOT approved reflective tape must meet all requirements for DOT certification. It not only includes the requirements for the width, color, spacing and other aspects of the reflective tape, but also clearly defines the minimum reflectivity requirements for DOT C2, C3, and C4.

The regulation from the Department of Transportation (DOT) on conspicuity material, referred to as DOT C2. It not only specifies the requirements of DOT reflective tape, but also specifies the application location of DOT conspicuity tape on trailers and trucks.
Sides Area – DOT reflective tape should be applied on both sides of trailers and trucks with more than 50% coverage on each side.
Lower Rear Area – DOT reflective tape must also be applied to the rear of every trailer and truck and cover the entire width of the vehicle.
Upper Rear Area – Two pairs of DOT white reflective tape arrays, each pair at least 300 mm (12 inches) long, must be positioned horizontally and vertically on the right and left upper corners of the rear of the body of each trailer and semitrailer, as close as practicable to the top of the trailer and as far apart as practicable.
Correct use of DOT reflective tape is a prerequisite for improving its durability.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) regulations for conspicuity materials.
